Encountering a Hispanic Community
Anyone who encounters one of a Hispanic community should learn to respect his or her beliefs. Each culture is different but should be tolerated. That is why it is always good to learn more about a certain community.
One trait that Hispanics are known for is their eating habits. Different from Americans’, one might be shocked to find that breakfasts only consist of light meals. The lunch (or el almuerzo) is the main meal of the day, so much so that the working adult in a family often comes home during that time simply to eat with his or her loved ones. La siesta is the rest period which takes place after lunch, and in the early evening, la merienda is served, which is also a light meal. La cena, which can take place as late as 9:00 pm, is equivalent to supper, but is also very light. These days, however, the Hispanic community has learned to adopt the three-meal system of the United States.
The Hispanic family gives much emphasis on trust and gaining acceptance among peers and loved ones. One should also note that personal space has a much different meaning compared to its American counterpart. The Hispanic does not mind being close to other people, even when it is just an acquaintance. That is why Hispanics tend to kiss or hug each other, even as friends.
Lastly, Hispanics have a lot of respect for their elders, and thus there are a lot of rules when speaking to someone older. In order not to come in conflict with their community, never forget their beliefs.
