Contributions of Hispanic Americans

Americans that have Hispanic heritage are often called Hispanic Americans, a term embraced by both whites and Hispanics alike as an acceptable label for the minority group. Hispanics are proud of their ancestry, which dates back to hundreds of years when the very first Spanish people decided to settle in the United States. Since then, Hispanics have made a significant contribution to the country, and continue to treat the States as their second home.

Not many people are grateful, or are even aware of the fact that the Hispanic and the white American has fought side by side, even during war. Many Hispanics served during both World War I and World War II, and every war in between. In Vietnam, for example, Hispanics made up one-fourth of all the casualties during the war.

There are also a significant number of Mexican-Americans who gave their lives to defend the United States, just as their white brothers had done. It is interesting to note that only 4.5% of the Hispanic Americans stayed at home during the Vietnam War. The rest, without hesitation, gave back what they could to the country they grew to love, and went into war to defend it.
It is the sad truth that discrimination against Hispanics is still evident today.

Thankfully, it is slowly dying out as diversity becomes a bigger thing in the United States. Eventually, the Hispanic will receive his true reward for being so loyal and giving – all that sacrifice just for a better home for his or her family.
