Characteristics of a Hispanic Community

Since the Hispanic population in the United States continues to grow exponentially, it is best for one to come to understand this group instead of denying its existence, or worse, discriminating against it. Knowing how the Hispanic thinks will help one befriend them, and maybe even pick up a few of their good traits.

The Hispanic family in a community is well-known for its family values. Every family is seen as a close-knit group, and a very important social unit. Even one’s extended family is seen as part of the official family unit, and everyone learns to help each other especially when there are problems within the family.

Hispanics are also very formal when interacting with one another. Handshakes are acceptable, but so are hugs and light kisses among family and close friends. The Hispanic is very affectionate but polite, and are very distinct when it comes to formal and informal interaction. Hispanics give much emphasis on appearance because they have a strict sense of honor and pride. Thus, formal attire is often worn to any special occasion. Today, however, the Hispanic is more accepting of everyday attire. Not being on time is acceptable in a Hispanic community.

A large percentage of the community is Roman Catholic and therefore very religious. Even patron saints’ days are celebrated, and many Hispanics attend mass each week. The community as a whole is very religious and will not take kindly to anyone making fun of their beliefs. Lastly, celebrations and holidays are also quite popular among Hispanics.
