Growth of the Hispanic Population in America

While still considered a minority, recent studies have shown that the Hispanic population in America is actually one of the fastest growing populations in the US with more than 15 percent of the population belonging to this ethnicity.  The US now has approximately a little under 47 million Hispanics living within its borders and this has now made Hispanics the largest race minority in the US with African Americans following at a close second and Asians a distant third.

There are indications that in a few more decades, in 2050 to be exact, it is predicted that the Hispanic population in America will actually triple in size and will then be around 133 million strong. This number will bump up the percentage of the Hispanic population to 30% of the total population of the US. This kind of a projection may be attributed to the fact that the number of Hispanics in the US twenty years ago was only at 22 million, which makes it a little less than half of what their population is today. With the current rate of growth that the minority is showing and with the Hispanic community in the US ranking second in the world, second only to Mexico, it is then but reasonable for this projection to be made. While April 1 is officially designated as Census Day, the Census Bureau will continue to accept 2010 Census questionnaires by mail through mid-April. Beginning May 1, census workers will begin going door to door to households that failed to mail back their forms — a massive operation that costs taxpayers an average of $57 per household versus the 42 cents it takes to get a response back by mail. Hispanic American and Latin American

The term Hispanic American refers to any inhabitant of the countries of Hispanic America, or a person of Hispanic ancestry who resides or is a citizen of the United States of America. “Hispanic” is a particular term that Richard Nixon’s administration came up with and is widely accepted by the country as a label for that group of people. Latino is also a term that is just as well-known, and is used alongside Hispanic, thus making the two words synonymous. However, Hispanic is very different from Spanish, because Spanish people (or Spaniards) are those who come directly from Spain. Read more »
